The useful first move is to separate decisions from hauling. Protect what stays, document what leaves, and make the access route part of the plan.
Measure the item and the route
Record the item width, height, and depth. Then measure the narrowest doorway, hallway turn, stair width, and elevator opening on the route out.
Look beyond the doorway
A piece can fit through a door and still fail at the next turn. Note railings, ceiling height over stairs, fixed light fixtures, and how far the crew must carry the item.
Decide what comes apart
Removable legs, leaves, cushions, and bed-frame rails can change the job. Do not dismantle a piece if the fasteners are damaged or the weight will become unstable.
Know when to stop
OSHA materials-handling guidance notes that bulky loads, obstructed visibility, and loads that cannot be safely handled call for help or mechanical equipment. Leave difficult carrying to a properly equipped crew.
Quick decision table
Local disposal note: Manatee County’s current solid-waste guidance separates household hazardous waste and special items from ordinary garbage and bulk collection. Check the county’s Waste Wizard for the exact item.
